Prime Endoscopy Bristol (PEB) appeared in the press again this week, as we reported on our achievement at the MAGIC Awards.
Our Bristol community gastroenterology service has been awarded first place in the national 2011 Movetis Awards for Gastrointestinal Care. The awards, commonly known as the MAGIC Awards, are designed to allow units, consultants and networks working across all areas of gastrointestinal care to be recognised for innovative work and the efforts made to raise the standards of patient care within gastroenterology, something that Prime Endoscopy Bristol have demonstrated exceptionally well.
Our community based gastroenterology service, led by General Practitioners Drs Richard Spence, Mike Cohen and John Entrican, in collaboration with Mr Paul Sylvester, Consultant Colorectal surgeon and Colonoscopy Screening lead for Bristol, recognised that waiting lists for GI clinic advice had become unacceptably long and that the introduction of targets had the detrimental effect of reducing priority for clinically urgent cases within secondary care. An audit demonstrated that a GP with a special interest in gastroenterology (GPwSI) could deal with at least 60-70% of cases coming into primary care rather than referring to secondary care, and that 30-40% of new GI referrals were found to have functional bowel disease that could safely be managed within a community setting. Our team therefore set about developing the project to enable patients with conditions such as dyspepsia, GORD, iron deficiency anaemia, IBS and rectal bleeding to be seen by a GPwSI in a community setting.
